Platonic, Archimedean and Kepler-Poinsot Solids
Shown below are sets of polyhedra commonly referenced during origami constructions.
The Platonic solids, named after the ancient Greek philosopher Plato (428-348 BC), also called the regular solids, are convex polyhedra bound by faces that are congruent regular convex polygons. The same numbers of faces meet at each vertex. There are exactly five.
The Archimedean solids, named after Archimedes (287-212 BC), are semi-regular convex polyhedra bound by two or more types of regular convex polygons meeting in identical vertices. They are distinct from the Platonic solids which are composed of a single type of polygon meeting at identical vertices. Shown here are 8 of the 13 Archimedean solids. Those not shown are the Snub Dodecahedron, Truncated Tetrahedron, Truncated Dodecahedron, Great Rhombicosidodecahedron and Great Rhombicuboctahedron.
